Things Change, They Really Do.
By TWilson | October 23, 2007
For some time now, I’ve been listening to the radio as I work, specifically talk radio. Frankly, I’m very concerned with what I’m hearing on the radio from various talk show hosts.
The topics of choice among the hosts seem to be their pet peeves designed to incite and anger the listening audience. What they present and how they present it doesn’t truly allow for meaningful discussion, at least not, from where I sit. When someone calls in to disagree, they are immediately challenged, pushed into a verbal corner where the host demands a yes or no answer to his or her question, and often painted as someone who is one step above imbecilic. These talk show hosts rant about what a horrible president someone will make, scream about how the other party, just wants to raise taxes, or give tax breaks to the rich or thump their chest about their loyalty and castigate others for not agreeing with them and imply they lack resolute and are disloyal citizens. Where did all this bile come from?
It’s bad enough you hear this on the radio, but it’s showing up in the workplace. Not so much the one sided political debates, but the unwillingness to listen to other individual. The insistence, that there is only one way to solve a problem and the unwillingness to listen to a different point of view is becoming common in the workplace. It seems that politeness and civility are iconoclastic values relegated to the past and for those who are deemed too slow to keep up with the fast pace of the environment.
I know for me the easiest thing I can do is change the radio station or turn it off, and the problem goes away. But when this attitude permeates the work environment one can’t just change the station and listen to classic or jazz music. What is one to do? When faced with this, just smile walk away and say, “Things change.” Guess what, they do.
