The Visit – Or How a Ten Month Old Melts Your Heart

    By TWilson | September 6, 2007

Yesterday ended the visit of our first grandchild, Patience. She is ten months old and so full of life. Watching her crawl around and trying to walk was such a thrill for my wife and me. As new grand parents we are trying to do everything that grand parents are supposed to do which is spoil her to no end. I believe both my wife and I can say, “Mission accomplished” in the spoiling area.

I supposed what makes her visit so special is when we received the news of her birth it was with concern as she was a preemie weighing in at 2lbs 11ozs. We almost lost her due to some complications which resulted in the doctors having to perform and emergency c-section on our daughter-in-law. My son and his wife were naturally worried, but as soon as she came home she begin to put on weight and to grow.

To see her now you would never know she was a preemie, the way she gets herself around and not to mention almost climbing (yes I said climbing) out of her play pen. There is one thing I’m confident about when she starts school, she may be the smallest one in her class but, she will be the toughest and most determined. As we watched her, my wife and I both commented on how she seems to have an inner drive that is pushing her to move forward. It’s as if she feels she has to master everything now.

It’s amazing how she saw everything in the house as brand new and something to chew on (she’s teething) along with trying things without fear of consequences. It’s too bad that we don’t see things the way a toddler does.

Normally, I would draw upon an analogy here, or use the visit of my grand daughter as a teaching moment, but not this time. I just wanted you to know about the joy both my wife and I experienced having her in our home and how she melted our hearts. It was hard to see them leave yesterday, but fortunately, for my wife, she gets to be with her again later this week as she is flying out to spend another week with her. Our son has a sales conference he has to attend and when he get’s back he will be moving and my wife is going out to watch Patience while our daughter-in-law starts packing for their move. My wife gets to spend more quality spoiling time and I have to hear about it when she comes back but, that’s ok, I will make up for it when they all come home for the Christmas holidays.
