Managers, Team Leaders and Supervisors!! Are you Maximizing The Talents of Your People to Get The Results You Need?
By TWilson | October 24, 2007
Or Are you more like Susan?
Susan received a promotion six months ago becoming the head of the commercial lease analysis unit at the Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) firm she worked for.
When she received this promotion, her manager complemented her on her numerous skills, specifically her level of detail in analyzing commercial leases finding mistakes that could have resulted in significant financial losses. Thrilled when she received her promotion now, she’s wondering if she’s going to make it.
For some reason she can’t seem to please her manager in the same manner she did prior to the promotion. She still puts in the hours and from what she can see her level of analysis and uncovering cost savings hasn’t diminished; in fact she recently uncovered a major error in a lease that would have cost the firm several hundred thousand dollars if the lease was signed. But, when she brought it to the attention of her manager she was disappointed at the lackluster level of praise she received from her manager.
What was it her manager said, “that’s nice Susan, I’m glad you brought this to my attention, but shouldn’t James have uncovered this? I thought you were training him to handle these types of situations? Also, what’s you status on the BKJ Report? You know we need that to make our presentation next week. Plus, I need you to address the issue of your people’s performance appraisals. But thanks for the work on this.”
Instead of praise for saving the company money, as she always received prior to her promotion, she is asked about performance appraisals, training someone on something she could do faster herself and some stupid report that no one will read once written. Besides, she plans to do like she’s always done, pull an all niter and pound it out as she had with similar reports she put together, after all her willingness to work the extra hours got her this promotion.
