  • Making the Transition from College to Corporate Series

    You’ve been on the job for about six months now.  So far things have gone along relatively smooth.  You have handled most of your assignments with relative ease.  Those that presented problems you asked and received what appeared to be sound advice on how to best handle them.  But something is bothering you.  Six months have passed and when you ask your team lead and supervisor how you’re doing they both tell you that for a new college hire you’re making adequate progress.  What does that mean?  You think back to when you where in college you at least had recevied a mid-term grade that let you know where you stood and if you needed to make mid-course corrections you had time.  Here at work no one seems to talk to you about your performance.  Also, when it comes to figuring out what is expected of you, people tell you just to do what you think is right and when you have questions for your team lead or supervisor, they tell you that they will get back to you but never do and you’re left to guess on how you should handle the problem.  Once again you think back to your recent college days, you could at least go to your professor and meet with them during office hours.  Here at work the people you need to meet with are always in meetings and when they get out they don’t have time, because they are rushing off to another meeting.

    It’s no wonder you’re surprised when your team lead comes over to your cubicle hands you a document that reads “Six Month Performance Review” and you’re told you need to read it and sign it as it has to be passed up to the department manager in two days.  You look it over you see things on there that you had no idea you were being measured on, you’re completely surprised this is the first time you’ve seen anything in writing about your performance.  As you read the review a sinking feeling comes over you.

    Making the transition from the college classroom to the corporate setting can and is often scary and confusing.  Working in the corporate environment can be very frustrating as you attempt to understand what is expected of you while getting little or no help from those with whom you are now working with.  That is why at T.A.Wilson & Associates we have designed the Making the Transition from College to Corporate Series.  A program specifically designed to help minorities who recently graduated and;
